Description
Drosera capensis is a carnivorous plant native to the Cape region of South Africa. It lives naturally in humid, sunny areas, where the soil is poor in nutrients. To compensate, it has developed a system of leaves covered with sticky tentacles that trap insects.
My growing experience
The plant I grow comes from a mother plant bought 7 years ago at Terra Botanica. From this stock, I planted seedlings to propagate my Droseras. They live all year round in an artificial peat bog I made from wood and placed in my greenhouse at the bottom of the garden, in a semi-shaded area. Even in winter, they remain in this bog, and can easily withstand night-time temperatures of down to -5°C.
The substrate
This substrate is specially designed to provide them with a suitable environment:
– 60% blond peat,
– 20% perlite,
– 20% sand.
Watering is done solely with rainwater, which I recover, to respect the natural needs of the plant, which cannot tolerate hard water.
