If you want a butterwort that makes a massive impact, Pinguicula gigantea Alba × moctezumae is the ultimate choice. This powerhouse hybrid inherits its impressive size, dual-sided sticky leaf surfaces and an uniform base from P. gigantea Alba, and combines them with the long, narrow, grass-like leaves of P. moctezumae. The result is a sprawling, spectacular rosette of dewy ribbons that maximizes its surface area to catch pests.
Because both parent species originate from environments that do not experience harsh winter freezes, ‘Apasionada’ inherited a homophyllous growth habit. This means that unlike many other Mexican butterworts, this hybrid retains much of its carnivorous form throughout the winter; it stays large, functional, and visually striking all year round. Pinguicula Apasionada was bred and raised in the United Kingdom by Stan Lampard, a highly influential figure in the carnivorous plant community. Lampard served as the editor and leader of the International Pinguicula Study Group (IPSG) during the 1990s. His work focused heavily on documenting, cultivating, and hybridizing Mexican butterworts, producing several famous cultivars known for their exceptional vigor and striking floral displays
